To be League Champions in Rugby League usually involved a 'Top Four' Play-Off, with two Semi-Finals and the Final played at a neutral venue. The Saints came second in the league during the 1931/32 campaign, took on leaders Huddersfield, without two key players, 'Superstar' winger Alf Ellaby and dynamic second-rower Albert Fildes, who had to depart for the Australian Tour with the Rugby League Lions. St. Helens won the toss and skipper George Lewis decided to play with the wind in their favour in the first half. Unfortunately, centre Tom Winnard failed to take advantage and missed two early penalty attempts. Yet persistent pressure by the Saints was soon to have its reward. Garvey got the ball from a scrum and shot through the flat-footed Yorkshire defence. He swerved round full-back Bowkett and as second-rower Tiffany tried a desperate cover tackle, flipped the ball to Winnard and the centre scored a gem of a try in the corner, which was converted by Lewis.

Just before half time, Winnard found touch near the Huddersfield line and scrum-half Thompson was penalised for feeding. Lewis piloted the ball over the bar to give the Saints a seven-point lead. Soon after the second half began, full-back Bowkett registered Huddersfield's first points with a dropped penalty goal, but Lewis replied with another well-taken penalty after scrum-half Garvey had been obstructed following a kick ahead.

The St. Helens defence seemed to be coping admirably until Jones and Lewis let a high ball bounce between them and Walker rushed in to score for the Yorkshiremen. Bowkett missed the conversion and there was no further scoring in the match. George Lewis was presented with the trophy by Mr. J.Wood, the Secretary of the Rugby League, but a problem ensued! George could hardly be seen by the triumphant Saints' supporters. Huge second-rower Jack Arkwright soon put matters right. He took hold of his captain and with one solid heave put him and the cup safely on his broad shoulders.
