MATCH REPORT

MATCH REPORT : Saints took the lead in the ninth minute. The ball was worked down the Saints right edge and former Rhino Konrad Hurrell burrowed under some tackles to score in the corner. The try was given after a video referee review. Tommy Makinson nailed the right touchline conversion, 6-0 Saints led.

The lead was increased in the 17th minute. Saints worked the ball right as Hurrell once again made a break down the wing, he found Makinson and he threw the ball back inside as Saints took the tackle. On the last Morgan Knowles ran a great line through the heart of the Rhinos defence and threw a great offload to find Alex Walmsley who slid over from close range. Makinson converted, 12-0 we led.

Leeds replied, the visitors made a break down their right wing and Saints’ scrambling defence were unable to stop Harry Newman running through a gap to score. Rhyse Martin converted, 12-6 we led. Minutes later the Rhinos had a try ruled out on the field as they knocked the ball on in-goal.

Saints responded and kept the ball alive and eventually threw it left, Regan Grace got the ball and stepped inside before going over the try line. The decision went upstairs and came back as a try. Makinson was unable to convert, 16-6 Saints led at the break.

Saints had the ball on Leeds’ line four minutes into the second half as they were able to keep the ball alive and it once again found its way to former Rhino Hurrell, and he powered over again from close range. Makinson was unable to convert, 20-6 Saints led.

Leeds grabbed their second try in the 53rd minute. Saints failed to deal with a high kick and Leeds got to the loose ball and worked it wide left for Bodene Thompson to stroll in. Martin converted, 20-12.

The hope wasn’t to last for too long though. Zak Hardaker made an error on his own line and from the set Joey Lussick found Agnatius Paasi who crashed over under the sticks for his first try in a Saints shirt. Makinson added the two from in front, 26-12 Saints led. Shortly after Rhinos try scorer Thompson was sin binned for a trip as Saints once again headed for the Rhinos sticks.

We weren’t going to be denied for much longer though. A great move through the hands from left to right ended with Joe Batchelor breaking a tackle before rounding a player to score. Makinson converted, 32-12. The scoring wasn’t done there. Once again Leeds made errors on their own line and from the penalty Saints earned Dan Norman went through a gap from close range. Makinson missed the conversion, 36-12.

With just over four minutes to go Leeds’ Zane Tetevano was given a red card for a high shot on Hurrell after he had kicked the ball. Former Saint James Bentley was then sin binned for preventing Saints from taking a quick restart.

When we did get underway Walmsley powered forward and carried multiple Rhinos defenders with him over the line with him. After a video referee review, Saints were awarded the four pointer as Walmsley grabbed his second try of the evening. Makinson converted the try for the final points of the evening, as Saints beat Leeds 42-12 at the Totally Wicked Stadium!
