Biography of William Hayes

HERITAGE NO : 287
William was a local second row forward who played three matches for the Saints in 1921. His outings for the First Team were most successful having been on the winning side in all encounters against Broughton Rangers, Salford and Leigh. We can assume that William also played for the Saints` Reserves team as well.

He was born in Dam Row, Ravenhead, St Helens. His father, Peter, heralded from Manchester and sadly died when William was only a few months old. His mother Ann (nee Boardman) remained with her five children in Dam Row, Ravenhead, St. Helens.

By 1921, at the time he was playing rugby for the Saints, William still living at Dam Row but had lost his job with Pilkingtons Glass due to the poster war economically downturn. In 1927 William married Lilian Wilson in St Helens. A son, Norman William was born later that year.

In 1939, William and his family were still living in Dam Row, Ravenhead with William’s mother Ann. William was working as a general labourer. William’s wife Lilian died in 1951. William passed away in December 1961 at the age of 59. Remarkably he had lived at the same address all his life.

Many thanks to William’s grand daughter, Beryl Armson, for the excellent photos of William and information about her grandfather.
