 HERITAGE NO : 990 Paul Hopkin was signed from Oldham St Annes and played three matches for the Saints between January and April 1987. Unfortunately, the forceful front-rower was never on the winning side in those matches. He made his debut at Thrum Hall, against Halifax on 4th January 1987 as the youngest starting forward in the lineup at just 18. His other team-mates in the front-row were hooker Graham Liptrot and Tony Burke. His final outing in the red vee was on 17th April 1987 in front of a Good Friday crowd of over 20,000 at Central Park, Wigan. Paul shared the substitute’s bench with another youngster, 17 years old Neil Gavin. Unfortunately, Saints, with a much changed and youthful team lost 12-42. The starting forwards were: Phil Southward [19] Mark Lee [18] John Fieldhouse [24] Paul Forber [22] Paul Round [23] and Bernard Dwyer [19.] After his time in the red vee had ended, Paul carried on playing at top amateur level for Oldham St Anne’s and then Accrington until the early 2000s. He has worked as a window fitter and a taxi driver. We believe that Paul is a Lorry driver nowadays and lives in Littlemoor, Oldham. Alex Service/Dave Dooley | ||||
