 HERITAGE NO : 1122 Steve, who could play anywhere in the backline was a highly rated signing from Warrington Wolves and made his [unofficial] debut from the bench against the New Zealand tourists on 25th October 2002 at Knowsley Road. The other bench players were Stuart Jones, Heath Cruckshank and Dave McConnell. During his time at Warrington, a then highly-rated Maden was plagued by injury, which cost him a place in the England U18 touring party to Australia and he was duly released by new Wolves coach Paul Cullen. Steve was duly signed by Saints' coach ian Millward. Born in Ashton in 1982 and a nephew of Chris Joynt, Steve made his sole appearance against Batley Bulldogs in the 5th round of the Challenge Cup on 28th February 2003 at Knowsley Road. He scored a try in Saints’ 38-12 success. Unfortunately, there were few opportunities for him at senior level, a great pity given his promising pedigree and he joined Leigh Centurions, as they were then known in 2004 for two seasons before joining Whitehaven. From 2008 he went on to enjoy further six years with the Leigh club, where he made 167 appearances. His professional rugby league odyssey also included a brief spell with Swinton Lions in 2014.
