Biography of Edward Cooper

HERITAGE NO : 405
Edward Stanley Cooper {known as Stanley} played two matches for the Saints in April 1933. Playing at prop forward he helped the Saints with two convincing victories over Rochdale Hornets and Castleford. The latter match was a famous game for Roy Hardgrave who bagged five tries for the Saints.

Stanley was one of two players recruited by a Mr Davies of Ogmore Vale. The scout was paid 5 Guineas for his scouting duties. The team mates from Ogmore Vale RFC travelled north to St Helens to try out in the home fixture against Rochdale Hornets in April 1933.

Both players had previously impressed in a trial match for top Welsh side Bridgend RU according to match report. Cooper was the Club Captain down at Ogmore Vale and regarded as a tough forward. In the match Cooper played well in a 47 points to 19 drubbing of the Hornets.

Stanley Cooper and his pal were invited to return to Lancashire the following week for the final fixture of the season against Castleford. In another comfortable victory, Stanley again put in an impressive performance.

Following discussions the Saints committee resolved to invited both players back to Lancashire in time for the following season. Meanwhile, efforts would be made to secure employment for the two Welshmen. It has to be recognised that unemployment was high in the town and the Club was engaged in cost cutting measures to balance the books. The 1932 Champions were being sold on as lean years were on the horizon. In any event the players did not return to Lancashire.

As a young child Stanley lived with his parents, Edward and Elizabeth at 19 Glyn Street, Ogmore Vale near Bridgend. Edward had one brother and three sisters. In 1921 the family were at this address. His father worked at the local coal mine in Ogmore Vale.

In 1935 he married Ada Jones and they went on to have at least two children. In 1939, Stanley and Ada were living at 12 Park Street, Ogmore Vale. Stanley died on the 31st of October 1966 aged 58. He was living Ogwy Street, Nantymoel at the time of his death.
