Biography of George Owens



HERITAGE NO : 356
George Owens was a very lively scrum half whose nickname was Dodger. The former Swansea RU Club and Wigan player had gained many honours in his days at Central Park. He played 7 matches for the Saints between January and March 1928 and drew winning pay on six of these occasions. Dodger scored two singleton tries against Leeds and Hull.

In 1921 George was living in Crown Street, Poolstock, Wigan. He lived with his wife Jane. He worked as a Labourer and Footballer at Central Park, home of the Wigan Football Club.

He was a in 1939 he was working in the Swansea docks as a labourer. George was living in Recorder Street, Swansea.

George had a son named George Gwynn Owens (1924-2006) who was living with his parents in Swansea in the late 1940s. George Gwynn married Elizabeth Williams in 1949.

George ‘Dodger’ Owens died in Swansea in April 1974 aged 83 and his death was recorded in South Glamorgan.
