MATCH REPORT

MATCH REPORT : Saints are into the Quarter-Finals of the Betfred Challenge Cup after a 8-32 victory over Castleford Tigers at the OneBore Stadium.

First Half

Saints took an early lead in West Yorkshire. On the back of a big Curtis Sironen run, former Cas man Daryl Clark picked the ball up from dummy half and scooted to score. Jackson Hastings added the conversion, 0-6 we led.

Two minutes later, the visitors had a second try. Sironen broke through the line and found Tristan Sailor in support, he threw a pass out wide to Lewis Murphy who scored in the corner. Hastings added the conversion, 0-12.

A third almost followed three minutes after. Kyle Feldt threw an offload to Mark Percival in the corner but the ball went to ground under pressure. Just after the half-hour mark, Saints had a third try. Saints kicked high to the right edge, Feldt collected the hosts tried an intercept as the ball went to ground but Percival collected it and went over in the corner on his return to the side. Hastings couldn’t convert this time around, 0-16.

Saints lost Daryl Clark and then shortly after Jake Burns to HIA’s during the first half, neither returned to the contest after failing the assessments. The hosts tried adding to the score line with more pressure as the half-time hooter sounded at The OneBore Stadium, the Red V leading 0-16 in West Yorkshire.

Second Half

The hosts grabbed their first try seven minutes into the second half. After some repeat sets on our line, eventually they worked it left and Jason Qareqare scored in the corner. Feldt was sin binned for a late hit on Krystian Mapapalangi in the leadup to the try. Tom Weaver couldn’t convert, 4-16.

Soon after, Mikaele Ravalawa tried to power his way over down the Tigers right edge but the Red V stopped him short of the line. Repeat sets followed as they continued to apply the pressure, but a poor kick at the end of their final set gave Saints a seven-tackle set. Qareqare almost had another try soon after but some good scrambling defence from the Saints stopped him short of the line.

With just under 15 minutes to go, the visitors had a rare second half attack. On the last Hastings put in a kick which forced Zac Cini to concede a dropout. The Red V made the most of that extra set. The ball was moved through the hands from right to left, Sailor throwing a cut-out pass to Murphy who grabbed his brace by rounding Ravalawa to score. Hastings couldn’t convert, 4-20.

Saints had a fifth try before the end of the game. Starting from a set ten metres out, the visitors used up a few tackles before Agnatius Paasi crashed his way over from close range. Hastings added the extras, 4-26.

The hosts got the ball back from the restart and later on in the set, Ashton Golding forcing his way over down the left edge. Weaver couldn’t convert, 8-26.

Saints grabbed one final try with less than three minutes to go. The visitors moved the ball through the hands down our right edge, Harry Robertson found Owen Dagnall and he found Feldt who was able to work his way over in the corner. With Hastings off the field, Sailor took over the kicking duties but missed, 8-30.

The visitors had a penalty with the final kick of the game, which Sailor converted to give the Red V a 8-32 victory over Castleford Tigers in Round Four of the Challenge Cup.
