MATCH REPORT : Saints thought they had taken the early lead at the BrewDog Stadium. Five minutes in, Jackson Hastings put in a high kick which bounced around but was claimed by Owen Dagnall who scored from close range. After initially being given as a try on the field, the video referee ruled there were two knock ons, Saints instead given a scrum ten metres out but nothing came of it. Seven minutes later, the hosts did go ahead. Saints broke down the field before being momentarily stopped. A short pass down the left edge found Jake Davies who did brilliantly to power his way over the line with multiple Trinity defenders on him. Hastings converted, 6-0. Quickly after, Saints had a second try. A few tackles were used up before Saints shifted the ball right courtesy of a great cut-out pass by Jonny Lomax and Kyle Feldt backed himself to score in the corner. Hastings again added the conversion, 12-0. Saints’ third score of the half came on the half-hour mark. Harry Robertson intercepted a pass deep in our half and raced the other way before being tackled. With the momentum of the run, Saints shifted the ball from right to left and Tristan Sailor threw a dummy and breezed through a gap to score. Hastings couldn’t convert, 16-0. Wakefield had a good opening towards the end of the half. Oliver Pratt raced away downfield and looked to have beaten the Saints defence but a great recovery run from Alex Walmsley forced a knock on. The half finished with the Saints holding a comfortable lead. Twelve minutes into the second half, Saints thought they had a fourth try. George Delaney crashed through the middle of the Wakefield pack and spun his way over to score. The referee ruled no try on-field due to a double movement which was confirmed after a lengthy check. With their next set, Wakefield had their first points. Camped on the Red V’s line, Tyson Smoothy picked the ball up from dummy half and looked to have been stopped over the line but he fell over the challenge and landed over the try-line to score. Jack Sinfield converted, 16-6. On the hour mark, Saints were awarded a penalty after Reece Lyne caught Robertson high and opted for two points which Hastings slotted over, 18-6. Five minutes later, Wakefield were within one-score. Jake Trueman picked up the ball inside the Saints ten and found Caius Faatili on his right shoulder who went through a gap to score. Sinfield converted, 18-12. Both defences held firm late on in the heat. Saints beating Wakefield Trinity 18-12 at the BrewDog Stadium.
